Exciting News! I am thrilled to announce that I have recently signed a book contract with Routledge for my upcoming work titled “Terrorism, Security, and Power in Russia: Domestic, Regional, and International Dimensions.”
Synopsis of the Work:
In this groundbreaking book, I delve into the intricate relationship between terrorism, security, and power in Russia since the Chechen-Russian conflicts. The Kremlin’s strategic use of the terrorism threat is explored across domestic, regional, and international contexts, revealing a pattern of securitisation rhetoric deeply ingrained in Russia’s political fabric. Through the lens of securitisation theory, the book analyzes the deliberate elevation of terrorism to an existential threat, allowing the Kremlin to bypass normal political processes. The narrative unfolds through a comprehensive examination of political actors and events in Chechnya, Syria, and Ukraine, providing readers with a nuanced understanding of Russia’s expansionist mindset.
Originality and Knowledge Gap:
This book stands out by seamlessly weaving together three critical levels of political analysis: domestic, regional, and international. The exploration of securitisation rhetoric at all these levels not only underscores its significance in Russian political life but also highlights its pivotal role in generating political change. By bridging the gap between academic rigour and reader-friendly presentation, this work is poised to attract a broad readership. It’s a departure from existing literature that often either overly focuses on personalities or becomes inaccessible due to academic language. Importantly, it fills a critical knowledge gap by shedding light on Russia’s counterterrorism agenda and its impact on reclaiming superpower status.
Summary of the Contribution of the Work:
Since the Chechen-Russian conflicts, the Kremlin has strategically employed the terrorism threat to justify domestic, regional, and foreign policy interventions. This book meticulously demonstrates how this strategy has propelled Russia’s expansionist agenda. The securitisation theory lens unveils a deliberate effort to elevate terrorism to an existential threat, overriding normal political processes. With a focus on key geopolitical events like the annexation of Crimea, intervention in Syria, and the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the book traces the evolution of the Kremlin’s securitisation rhetoric, providing a profound analysis of its propaganda machine.
This work, born out of four years of intensive research during my PhD in Political Science, is not just a manuscript—it’s a journey that began with the Chechen Wars and has evolved into an in-depth exploration of Russia’s political landscape. The book unravels the intricacies of securitisation rhetoric, revealing how the Kremlin transformed the terrorism threat into a tool for legitimizing international advances, territorial acquisitions, and a militarized foreign policy.
As I embark on this exciting journey, I am confident that the book will be a valuable addition to the discourse on Russian politics, providing readers with both academic depth and accessibility. Stay tuned for more updates!
