In 2023, the British Academy asked 11 Early Career Researcher Network members to share their experiences in UK higher education. I am one of those researchers who shared their stories. This collection of essays brings attention to the voices, perspectives, and journeys of early career researchers, highlighting the realities and challenges they face. These challenges include precarious contracts, grant applications, and balancing parenthood with academic pressures. The authors provide personal insights, policy suggestions, and practical advice for overcoming these hurdles, while also celebrating the fulfilling and rewarding moments in their careers.
You will find my article “Everyone Struggles: A Cautionary Tale of an Independent Early
Career Researcher” on page 22. I share my experience of being an independent researcher and my thought on the lack of institutional support for early career researchers and especially freshly graduated PhDs. Please let me know what you think in the comments!
